Originally from Japan, Shiatsu (shi = fingers and atsu = pressure) is distinguished from other types of massage by its notion of vital energy. According to the Orientals, a certain amount of energy – called chi – is transmitted to humans by inheritance from birth. Then, this basic energy is increased or decreased according to our lifestyle. For example, deep breathing and healthy eating can well improve our energy capacity. Conversely, poor lifestyle reduces the same.
In our body we have long channels called “meridians”, the vital energy flows like water in the rivers. Poor circulation can cause imbalances and becomes the cause of our discomfort, whereas a displacement fluid energy achieves equilibrium. However, Shiatsu is an extremely effective method to eliminate bottlenecks and facilitate the free flow of energy in our body.
The practice of shiatsu
One of the many benefits of Shiatsu is that it requires no massage oil or special accessory and can be practiced almost anywhere: in a private clinic, your home, your workplace and even out! The treatment is usually given on a mattress on the floor, on a coffee table or a chair massage. Usually supine, you can lie on the stomach, back, sideways or even sitting. The practice of shiatsu is done over clothing or directly on the skin.
At the first meeting, the therapist conducts a health check-up by asking you some questions about your medical history, your lifestyle, your eating habits and anything else that may be significant. Then, after taking your pulse, it switches to another type of examination: he observes your posture, your approach, texture, and color of your skin and the sound of your voice.
Finally, the abdomen is palpated with the fingertips to identify energy circuits and “emptied” of their energy.
After establishing the diagnosis, the therapist may employ different techniques to change the quality of energy. Stretching, pressure, voltage, and rotations will be used to work at different areas of the body with fingers, elbows, knees and even feet! By lobbying more or less strong, the therapist works on specific points (the tsubos) and recharge well, energy, meridians that are missing.
Usually, by the end of a session, you will feel relaxed and refreshed with a sense of calm. After a few sessions, the changes begin to occur with results such as flexibility, reduced pain and a feeling of freedom! The healing will not occur just occasionally, but will instead be a continuous movement towards harmony, balance and integrity.
Main indications for shiatsu
* Shock and/or great fear recently.
* Fever: Shiatsu is a vasodilator.
* Over-eating and drinking too much (wait at least two or three hours after meals).
* Taking certain medications (tranquilizers, anti-coagulants).
* Recent major surgery (wait a week).
* Risk pregnancy.
* Symptoms of phlebitis (red and hot legs …).
* Expression of infarction.
* Osteoporosis problems.
* Contagious skin infection.
According to the same principles as shiatsu, do-in is a form of self-massage that has the advantage of being able to act on our own body when desired.
In the bed, the shower or outdoors, the practice of do-in works the same way on energy deficits, regulating traffic by a set of exercises and technical harmonization and revitalization.
As in the practice of shiatsu, do-in should exert pressure, friction, twisting and stretching on the painful point, to a tolerable limit. When the pain has subsided, we start to support until it disappears and reappears again. And so on…
If the pain is too strong, then we work on the opposite side.
To alleviate the problems of small daily practice of do-in replaces the pills while restoring energy. But first and foremost a preventive function.
